What are HK Primary Schools Doing About Social Networking?

Whilst at the Flat Classroom conference today, Anne Baird showed me Super Clubs Plus and informed me that the Victorian Education Department has purchased a license for every school in the state to have access to this. I was amazed that such a quality, monitored resource like this existed and that it is from the UK. The company that sets it all up, intuitive media, was not present at BETT09 and so I was totally unaware that such a thing was out there.

I know that a lot of Hong Kong students, especially in international schools are very aware of social network sites, especially Facebook and they want to get onboard and participate. This presents a problem for kids under 13 years of age as they are effectively breaking the law to register if they are under 13. I know of many schools desperately trying to encourage good cybercitizenship and this is immediately broken if we condone kids use of FB when under age.

These “Y Generation” kids are not going to buy the “just don’t do it” message but they just might buy into an alternative that connects them to kids their own age around the world, is monitored by real life, friendly and supportive monitors at all times and has loads of interesting things for them to do. I was amazed when Anne, who is a moderator herself showed me around.

I am sure that many of you reading this are aware of other alternatives if you teach kids under 13 but they have not been on my radar to date. I would very much appreciate advice on ones that are in use by the kids at your school. Over to you for comments.
