WA students behind in computer skills
I have just read an article about my home state that seems a bit surprising. It is about the
computer skills of kids based on testing carried out in 2005.
Both year 6 and year 10 kids were found to be below the national averages. Bit disappointing seeing that ICT has been touted as a great way to improve the learning of kids, especially indigenous kids, in remote regions.
I can only wonder what we might reveal if we were to carry out a similar testing programme on a global basis. I know kids here in Hong Kong would be proficient at getting mp3s onto their ipod or equivalent devices. They would also be great at finding sites for downloading pirated games to their PSP but it would be a great test to see if the average HK kid could do some of the things mentioned in the test such as using an unseen flag design graphics program to create a flag and using information provided to create a Power Point program. I imagine that the sedentary nature of HK kids might make them more computer literate but then, who knows?
