Could this be the dawn of the Low-cost laptop for schools

I have just been reading some postings about the contracts that have been announced for supply of the new wave of low-cost, net-connected laptops designed for kids in developing countries. Here is what eschool news had to say:

Mere hours after news broke that Uruguay’s government placed the first official order for the One Laptop Per Child initiative’s XO, or “$100 laptop,” chip giant Intel Corp. announces that Libya has ordered 150,000 of Intel’s own version of the low-cost laptop, the Classmate PC.

Above is a picture of both devices XO on the left and Classmate PC on the right.

Could we be looking at tools that are really going to change what happens in classrooms from this point onward?

I really can’t see teachers saying that there is no point preparing to have every child with a laptop anymore as even the poorest schools may soon have 1:1 access.

Food for thought indeed!
