Transporting Laptops Around Schools

From 8 years experience of setting up and coordinating a laptop program in a school to my privileged opportunity to visit schools using laptops in multiple countries, I can confidently say “no one has the storage and access of portable technology with children 100% right” I firmly believe that no one ever will. My own use of portable technology and the way that I lug it around leaves a lot to be desired. In techno-savvy Hong Kong I still get an amazing number of stares when I use a small notebook on a bus or a train. Yes, I have a PDA but for me, I can get a lot more done more efficiently on a notebook.

Something that schools in the UK and Australia have been sourcing more of is notebook trolleys.  These are whopping things on wheels that can hold 15 or sometimes up to 30 notebooks in a way that they can be charged and sometimes have peripherals like printer, Wireless access point, data projector etc onboard.

Chris Betcher recently sourced some of these from my friend Marco Leung in China for his Queensland school.  Chris Blogged about it here.

I have been wondering if there is a market for this sort of thing in Hong Kong. The problem here is that the schools are on so many different levels and not all of them are accessible by lifts.

This will be something to look into.

  2. Sorry about that Chris!

At least I am not as generic as some of my WA former colleagues who use “over east” to refer to anything the other side of the Nullabor :)
